Hurricane & Storm Preparedness

Living on the Outer Banks means being ready for tropical storms and hurricanes. Here are the essentials every resident should know:

  • Sign up for Dare County emergency alerts (opens in new tab)
  • Keep a 72-hour emergency kit (water, food, medications, flashlight, batteries, first aid)
  • Know your evacuation zone — Manteo residents typically evacuate via US-64 West
  • Document your property with photos before storm season (June 1 – November 30)
  • Secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and loose items before a storm arrives

Flood Zone & Insurance

Roanoak Village is in a coastal flood-prone area. Flood insurance is strongly recommended. Check your specific flood zone via the FEMA Flood Map Service Center — zones determine insurance rates and building requirements.

Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. Visit floodsmart.gov (opens in new tab) to learn about the National Flood Insurance Program.
